I bought this book as a reference for a database class I took last semester. It was worth its weight in gold. I was able to look up just about everything I needed without scrolling through lecture slides and digging through notes. The information is to the point, which is exactly what I wanted.
I don't think a long, comprehensive review is needed here. This is a quick reference guide to have handy when you're working on a project or whatever. You won't learn MySQL from it but as long as you are already familiar with it, it serves as a great, quick reference, especially when you are utilizing keywords or routines that you don't normally use and therefore don't have in the forefront of your mind. If you need a bit of a field refresher, this works great!
Good how to book. Kindle portability helps but makes it awkward to key the examples unless one has another computer.
This book is a perfect primer and reference.
I keep this at my desktop side and use the heck of the index to get me the right syntax.
'MySQL in a Nutshell' is another solid release in the family of 'Nutshell' books by O'Reilly. As with all other Nutshell books, this isn't a learning book, moreso a shorter reference manual for experienced developers who know what they are using and need a guide to help them out through the process. With MySQL In A Nutshell you are getting exactly that. Spread over nearly 550 pages and 19 Chapters, here's an overview of the content within:01. Introduction02. Installing MySQL03. MySQL Basics04. Security, User Statements, Functions05. Database And Table Schema Statements06. Data Manipulation Statements And Functions07. Table And Server Administration Statements And Functions08. Replication Statements And Functions09. Stored Routines Statements10. Aggregate Clauses, Functions And Subqueries11. String Functions12. Date And Time Functions13. Mathematical Functions14. Flow Control Functions15. MySQL Server And Client16. Command-Line Utilities17. C API18. Perl API19. PHP APIThe layout is good, separation of data is intelligently laid out and the writing is solid. If you are a MySQL developer or admin that is looking for a resource by your side at all times this is a great book to have!!***** RECOMMENDED
