Traversing well-trod ground, this volume has several shortcomings that can get in the way of the story being told. Chief among them are two layout issues: (a) far too many photos--and all the reproduced documents--are printed in very small format (sometimes the size of a postage stamp) making the latter impossible to read; and (2) each page is "framed" in a 1.5-inch light blue margin on the outer side which has the effect of forcing the text toward the book's center. Why? Was there not enough text for a normal layout? Given the many references to Pan Am reunions, the book appears largely aimed at attendees.All that said, the book has interesting aspects--such as the color photos of the interior of the Boeing 314 replica to be seen at the Foynes (Ireland) museum--and the many first-person accounts. Some of the material is new though much is drawn from existing books. Overall, however, the reader comes away with a feel for the era and the classic water-born aircraft and the men who flew them.
I've always been fascinated by the huge seaplanes that provided the first commercial ocean crossing passenger flights. This book pretty much filled in all the information that I didn't know. I had spent a year stationed on Wake Island right next to the remnants of the Pan American pier. The hotel was long gone due to the Japanese attack and later occupation. There are several edge of the seat adventures especially at the outbreak of WWII written by first hand participants.
It is a beautifully designed book! I thoroughly enjoyed the personal accounts of flying in the days of the flying boats! Nostalgia for the aviation enthusiast! I preferred these stories rather than a dry accounting of the beginnings of ocean flight. I bought one for a gift as well! MLB
