About the Author
Dr. Braja Das is Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento. He received his M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa and his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of a number of geotechnical engineering texts and reference books and more than 250 technical papers in the area of geotechnical engineering. His primary areas of research include shallow foundations, earth anchors, and geosynthetics. Dr. Das is a Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Life Member of the American Society for Engineering Education, and an Emeritus Member of the Chemical and Mechanical Stabilization Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the National Research Council (Washington D.C.). He has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, including the AMOCO Foundation Award, the AT&T Award for Teaching Excellence from the American Society for Engineering Education, the Ralph Teetor Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of Texas at El Paso.

This text along with, "Geotechnical Engineer's Portable Handbook (also available on Amazon)" were my primary references for the Geotechnical Civil PE Exam. This book has a good overview basic soil principles, tests, settlement, etc. and is sufficient for pretty much every question on the depth portion of the exam. As the title suggests this book excels in the explaination, details, and different methodologies for all types of foundations. If you read and understand this book you'll definitely be good to go in my opinion. A word of caution, while many simplified equations are presented for bearing/pile capacity the PE exam likes to use certain forms of the equation. As a result certain design factors in this text can and will likely vary from what you may need to use on the test. This can definitely cause you to select the wrong answer on the exam. I know I did this on plenty of practice exams. So if you do use this text as an exam reference be aware of that and closely read if the exam provides you with the form and factors of any needed equation.This book, like many other references, falls short on covering special topics that would be presented on the PE exam (seismic, difficult/expansive soils, soil improvement/stabilization, etc.). I feel like the portable handbook previously mentioned does a better job with those topics. Overall this is an excellent resource and definitely one you'd want in your arsenal to be successful on the exam.
I purchased this textbook for the Civil Engineering PE Exam, Geotechnical depth. Along with Das's basic Geotechnical Engineering book, I feel I am well prepared for the afternoon portion of the exam. I'm studying alone and this book is very simple to understand, which helps a lot when you don't have a professor on hand to clarify the text for you.Answers are provided for all odd problems in the book, and there are many example problems. Very helpful.
Fairly well-written, concise. Fairly good explanations of concepts. Sometimes unclear, some mistakes or misprints. For example, I got docked points on my homework because problem 2.3 on page 127 says depth 7.9m instead of 7.5m. This cheaper, paperback, international version is almost exactly the same as the expensive, hardcover, US customary unit version. Page numbers almost always line up between the two versions, and the same quantities seem to be used in both versions. For example, the US customary unit version lists an outer diameter of 3" on problem 2.1 of page 126. This versions problem 2.1 of page 126 lists an outer diameter of 76.2mm, the metric length equivalent.
This was among the better of the required texts I needed in college. It is well organized and the examples are thorough and there are enough of them to answer questions. The author seem to have a solid understanding of the material and wrote questions that were more like questions you'd encounter in industry. Ones where you have to define the parameters (and look something up) and aren't given every single variable.
Straightforward descriptions of the models used in foundation engineering; examples are helpful, and cover enough cases that there is no ambiguity while still not taking up too much space.Can't comment on how well suited it is to real-world application, as I'm still a student.Variables aren't defined each time they are used, and a single letter can have multiple definitions. I'm naming troubles come directly from the technical papers it references, though, and undefined variables usually match the most recent usage of the letter.
This book is an ok text on foundations. There are a lots of typos in the book. My professor has to constantly add corrections to the book. He calls the text sloppy. In every edition some mistakes are corrected and new ones appear. Would not recommend this book to anyone, instead look at some Federal Highway Publications and a soil mechanics book. That will be a lot more helpful.
This is a great geotechnical and foundation textbook for designing shallow foundations, deep foundations, retaining walls and most foundation related items.
