I was looking forward to reading this, but after about 50 pages, put it down. I will give it away.It's rare that I do that, but the excruciating detail about the couple building the house got very tedious.Plus, they both came across as extremely unsympathetic and frankly, annoying.I recently bought and read this other book, which is on the same topic: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0143130943/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Much, much more enjoyable to read!
I've served in all three capacities covered in this book: customer, builder, and designer. I can say without reservation that the process as relayed by Kidder is unerringly accurate. He perfectly captures the excitement and the angst the customers experience, the pride and the frustration of the builders, and the high art and compromise of the designer. There's a bit of geographic bias here, as all the parties involved are New Englanders, and some of their behaviors are apparently local to the area (the unwillingness to negotiate comes to mind). I identify most strongly with the builders, and frankly I'm afraid I would've told the customers to take a long walk off a short pier long before the house was finished.If you're building or considering building a new home, I strongly recommend this.
I'm surprised how often I quote parts of this book to both friends and clients.The book is ostensibly about three parties: the family, the architect, and the builders. But for me, it's all about the builders who have so much integrity and innocence.
Interesting story of how different people experienced the building of a house (e.g., architect, owners, carpenters, etc.). A little outdated and at times a slog. But for anyone who has ever been through a remodel or build, a good and reminder of what each person might be going through and what you might do or not do to help things progress.
This was a book club pick and while I really wanted to finish it, I finally had to stop. It was written well and seemed like it would be interesting, but it plodded along SO slowly and with so much detail that I finally gave up.
I originally read this book when we built a house in 1989. Reread it as we built a house this summer. Love Kidder's prose.. really need to be involved in house building or renovation to appreciate how building a house is more than just hiring a crew.. Ours became family and I made the cookies.
Tracy Kidder has a gift for making people come alive on the page. If you enjoy that, and I do, this book introduces you to some very enjoyable people undergoing a fascinating process. The humor and humanity of everyone (the writer included for observing and recording them) were joys. It would be interesting to have an update on all of them these many years later for the book has the effect of causing one to care. I do.
This book made me want to go out and become a carpenter. Then I found out how hard it is and gave up. Still, a great experience I had reading this book.
