Five books were offered in a price range from $13--81. I chose the cheapest copy and was pleased with the quality and price of the book. The delivery took 2-3 weeks but that may be standard for such transactions.
Before halftone illustrations made photographs reproducible for newspapers, crisp, detailed wood engravings published in "illustrated weeklies" (and monthlies) were the primary means by which Americans got a literal "picture" of what was going on in other parts of the world--including their own "Wild West." The process was well established by the 1840's, and by means of it they got to "see" the Mexican and Civil Wars, the gold rushes, emigrant trains, Indian wars, cattle drives, boom towns, land and sheep wars, buffalo hunters, railroad building, and scenery of the untamed territories. Such are these 255 reproductions (from some 70 artists), portraying everything from flatboaters and mountain men to emigrant cars to poker-table quarrels. Each one has an associated commentary that places it in context, and there are two extensive indices, one of artists, the other of subjects. Anyone interested in the Old West should have this oversize Dover volume on the shelf.
