Barry Humphries is an Australian icon and one of the great intellectual forces in the country. I first encountered The Traveller's Tool many years ago and found it to be one of the funniest books I have ever read. In Les Patterson, Humphries has created a character almost diametrically opposed to his own. He is profoundly gross, ignorant and bigoted and almost bestial in his behaviour. All of this would be objectionable if he were not also profoundly funny. As unpalatable as this may be, Patterson is also quintessentially Australian. Therefore, his character is a vehicle for razor-sharp satire. Humphries' genius is that he has us laughing at ourselves - uproariously. 'Crude' is an entirely inadequate word to describe the depths of depravity that the language plumbs. The sheer range of euphemisms for the male genitalia, for example, is quite extraordinary. As a performer, Humphries is unrivalled. What a joy it is to have him reading his own work in his own, inimitable character.
