I've been fascinated by the story of Sarah Winchester since the early 80s when I lived in San Jose (the location of her most well-known residence, the Winchester Mystery House); however, I didn't get to tour the house until the mid-90s. The home is EXTREMELY interesting (and well worth the visit), as are "explanations" for various aspects that are given by tour guides. However, interesting doesn't equal truth, so I was skeptical about many things - but it was incredibly hard to find factual information about Sarah or her home.So I was excited to come across this book through Amazon's search engine; although I ordered it a few years ago, I didn't read it until last week.Sarah's history is long, complicated, and very interesting. The book chronicles the origin of her family, her husband's family; describes how the Winchester Rifle Co. came into existence; and the course of her life thereafter. Although it gets to be a little difficult at times to keep track of the various families involved, overall the information is very comprehensive and I think necessary to understand more of who exactly Sarah Winchester was as a person AND as a citizen of California. I was amazed at the scope of the wide-ranging properties she owned, and enjoyed reading follow-up information that details what those locations have evolved into since her death. She was a very savvy businesswoman, and certainly nobody's fool! :)I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the "real" story of Sarah Winchester and the backstory of her famous house. It left me wanting to know even more about Sarah - not because the book isn't thorough (because it certainly is!), but because she was a very intriguing a person who led a long, very atypical life.
a very well written 'down to Earth' representation of Mrs. Winchester. Helps give a much more realistic perspective on her life and her home(s). When visiting the Mystery House as I have many times, Sarah is typically depicted as a bit of a kook, certainly eccentric and not like most people. She was indeed a very intelligent, creative and inventive lady who created a magnificent testimony to her love of architecture, wood carving, stained glass and design. This book gives more information pertinent to her behaviors that are practical in nature and offer a less strange explanation for why she did what she did. This makes her far more easy to relate to. I have a much greater appreciation for how accomplished she was.
I love the story of Sarah Winchester and this gives an honest account of a quiet, much maligned but genuinely kind woman. My only complaint is that the book goes into the history of the too families and their businesses to a greater degree than I thought necessary. But this book is extremely well researched and gives an honest look at a woman who was savvy at business and who took care of her poorer family relations, all the while being made fun of in the press and public eye.
I've heard stories my whole life about the Winchester house from my Grandmother. Her family was friends with the Brown family that purchased the house after Sarah Winchester passed away. When my Grandmother was a child, she use to spend time at the house with her family and would help "guide" people out of the house on the self-guided tours. There was no furniture back then and arrows were on the floor to let people know where to go(painted or tape, I dont know). I've always wanted to check out the house out of curiosity and it just felt like a way to connect with family that had been there so long ago. I've had so many questions about the stories tour guides have been promoting as truth and just always felt angry that the stories just didnt add up. For many years I've been trying to research the real stories about this family and felt terrible about how Sarah is still being portrayed. Then, I came across this book and for the first time, I had to search to get in contact with the author to thank her! I have never tried to contact an author before, but I just had to in this case. Finally there is a book that has the real stories. Mary Jo Ignoffo has done much research and presents it in a way that keeps you wanting more. I have recommended this book to so many friends and people I dont know. When I go to paranormal events, I make sure to take this with me to share and let people know to always research legends instead of just believing stories created by media and Mr. Brown (who purchased the property for the sole purpose of making it an amusement park...to make money, not tell the truth.) In all, if you are interested in history, live in the area like me and want to know more of local history, or are into the ghost stories of the legend, I highly recommend reading this book!
It's great to read what little is known about the real Sarah WInchester. I've been to the house and the stories are just sensationalism. The stories are a really good example of what demanding privacy can cost you.
I loved learning the TRUE facts behind Sarah Winchester, her life and legacy....beyond all the ghost and spook stuff. The promotional information that the Winchester Mystery House portrays is fine for publicity and tourism, but purists are more interested in the real Sarah Winchester and the reasons behind her oddities and the oddities associated with the house. I first toured the House as a child in the mid-1950s and have been back several times. I also collect vintage postcards of the house through the decades. A good easy read and well-researched.
Ms Ignoffo did a wonderful job researching and dispelling myths - I felt I actually KNEW Mrs Winchester and now I tell anyone who will listen that the ghost stuff was garbage!! People are like NO WAY! And I have to tell them, yes, Way... The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was due to the fact that so much of it was filled with San Francisco/California history and being a history buff I already knew these things so I skipped through much of that... but still, nice job and very interesting take on the mysterious lady.
