Sandeep Nagar, Ph.D. teaches and consults on the use of Octave, MATLAB and other open source programming languages for for data science/analysis and numerical computing for engineering and science applications. In addition to teaching at universities, he frequently gives workshops covering open source software. Sandeep has a Ph.D. in Material Science from KTH, Sweden in May 2012. Prior to that degree, he obtained a M.Sc. in Physics with specialization in Electronics and Radio Physics and a B.Sc.B.Ed degrees in India.

The contents of the book probably rate five stars, but the author needs to hire a competent editor to fix all of the typos and grammatical errors in what appears to be a self-published work. The errors really detract from the material. For example on p.29 "* is an operator and 3.0 and 5 are operators" - no, 3.0 and 5 are OPERANDS! This statement causes confusion after the previous discussion of operands and operators (also, the order should be switched for parallel construction). There are also errors in math notation (for example an equation on p.3 places the equal sign and rhs inside the parentheses of the lhs, and puts "sin" in an exponent and the parenthesis of the sin outside the exponent). Numerous errors like this make it a difficult read - I don't have confidence in the material because I feel there are probably many other mistakes that I am missing. There are also cases where ambiguous words are used, and an editor would replace these with less confusing words. I shouldn't have to add my own corrections to page after page of a book, it is the author's job to fix these issues before publication. I paid full price for a finished product, not for what appears to be a draft. Self-publishing authors should hire good editors to find and fix these issues - it will be money well spent and will seriously improve their books. Case in point: I hesitate to buy another book by this author because of these issues. Beneath these issues it is a very good introduction to Octave, and the author has a very accessible writing style.
To explain my rating:. The content gets four stars. It's useful and correct, though obviously written by someone for whom English is not their native language. The Kindle version gets one star (or less). It's not a proper e-book but rather just a scan of the paper version. Hard to read and navigate. Stick with the paper version.
I bought this to help me to understand reading files and creating plots. I don't feel as if this book did it for me. In fact, I feel it is a $17 waste.
I was proficient with Python and C before I referred this book to implement Numerical Analysis techniques (which was a part of my college curriculum). Having not coded in Octave before, this book was great help. The content is well planned and arranged which makes it great even for beginner programmers. You'd be coding useful scripts in Octave pretty damn quick.
Octave is very useful for students who do not have access to MATLAB. It runs MATLAB files. The book explains all of octave in short and crisp manner. I particularly liked the way example codes are embedded within explanatory text. This is best feature of book. Also being a short text it is a fast way to learn.
