I was quite nervous about visiting NYC for the first time, but this book really helped. In fact, I should say these books, because I bought the 2017 version to plan and then got the 2018 on a whim, right before I left (so glad I did because it looks like about a quarter of the restaurants in this version aren’t in the old one, and we ate like kings while in the city. The suggested restaurants were amazing!). I really appreciated the way the author broke down the city into neighborhoods. We followed the organization (and the suggested itineraries) and were able to do more than I’d hoped we’d be able to do in a week because the itineraries kept us in one neighborhood one day, another the next, so we didn’t have to spend too much time crossing the city. I also appreciated the author’s straightforward advice. I could tell from her write ups when a place would be of interest to me and when it wouldn’t, something I didn’t get from reading online reviews. Some advice if you go:Do what the book says and get online discounts for Broadway shows (the lines at TKTS were really long)As the book recommends, the best time to see the Metropolitan Museum is Friday evening. We went in late afternoon and then watched as the crowd melted away after dark. We had the place to ourselves almost!Don’t be scared of the subways. They’re convenient if crowded and will get you around much quicker, for less money, than taxis. There’s helpful info in the book on how to usethem.

I am a New Yorker who bought this wonderful and comprehensive book for out of town house guests. While reading it I discovered some hot spot restaurants (ones locals are talking about and patronize). Included in the book are many of my favorite classic attractions (bravo) and some funky ones I didn't know about such as Mmuseumm a very unusual funky museum in an elevator shaft with really cool exhibits. This book gave me ideas for some fun activities like cooking classes, TV tapings, walking tours, historic houses and sights, etc. It's a fantastic guide book to NYC!!

I love the Frommer guides because, unlike other guides, and a lot of the info I find online, they give exact prices---for restaurant meals, for museum entry fees, and fees for other things that you see. So I'm able to create an actual budget for the trip, and because the guides are so accurate, I can stick to it. I also like the star rating system--1, 2 and 3 so you can see really quickly what's going to be most worth your time. That was true of this guide---totally up-to-date. But this one was so fun to read! The author has a knack for giving just the right amount of information so you know what will appeal to you (sometimes from her write ups it was clear that the place would be better for travelers with different tastes than me). I also liked how down to earth the advice was. I felt, after reading the book, like I wouldn't have problems riding the subway, and that I wouldn't waste time trying to cram in too many things in one day. That turned out to be so! I think a lot of it was this book. It really was terrific (and I'm going to hang on to it, because I really want to come back to NYC for my next vacation). If you can only go to one restaurant in the book, choose Santina---amazing Italian food, crazy place (it's a glass cube). Also: see Once on This Island (great---and I used the website recommended in the book to get discount Broaday tickets. Worked well). Finally: do go to the Museum of the City of New York. I wouldn't have gone to it normally, as I'm not that much of a history person, but the description in the book convinced me it wouldn't be boring, and it ended up being the favorite thing I saw in the city. And I also felt like I understood the city better after that museum. Anyway: GREAT BOOK! A MUST!!

We had never been to NYC so we weren't sure what to expect. This book helped tremendously. The tips for traveling by subway or bus (just do it!) were very helpful and on one occasion, I was able to give advice to someone else trying to ride the bus. The neighborhood and subway maps were VERY helpful for navigation. We followed the recommendations for a place to stay (we stayed just outside Manhattan in New Jersey), how to see the city from above (Top of the Rock -- much shorter lines than the Empire State Building), and how to travel around the city -- taking the subway or bus was surprisingly easy. After studying this book (I did spend a lot of time with it before our trip), I really felt ready and our time in NYC went great. The only downside was that there is SO much to do in NYC that I want to go back now (and spend a lot more time there).

Book gave me so much confidence in approaching NYC. I'd been overwhelmed in the planning. Had read Fodors, but....I don't know. They seem to love everything they write about, and now that I'm home I know that one piece of their advice I was going to follow would have been a disaster (in the 5 day plan they suggest going to The Statue of Liberty and the 9/11 Museum and all the stuff downtown in one day. It took me two and I was still exhausted!).This book was better. Peppy writing, filled with good advice, honest and totally up-to-date. And the walking tour of the financial district laid out in the book was as good as any walking tour with a guide would have been (a nice money saver).

All in all - this is a very good guide. The hotel and restaurant listings are a bit slim. This book works best when paired with online hotel/restaurant info.. This is a very good book in explaining sites, landmarks, taxi fees, subway fees, etc.. I used this book a lot. It saved us money. One of my favorite features was the do-it-yourself history walking tour of Lower Manhattan. We saw things we would have missed otherwise. We had a full day of sight-seeing for free using this tour. This is a very practical book for anyone going to NYC. Includes a good map. Highly recommend.
